Why Fleet Diagnostic Costs Are Exploding in 2026 — and the One-Time Fix

1. Labor rates are structurally rising

Fullbay's 2026 State of Heavy-Duty Repair data puts the median shop labor rate at $149 per hour — up roughly 10% in a single year — with technician wages jumping 14.1%, nearly triple inflation. That's not a spike. It's a bidding war for a shrinking pool of qualified techs, and every raise gets passed straight into the rate you pay at the counter.

2. The technician pipeline is broken

ATRI's research found roughly two-thirds of diesel shops understaffed, with nearly one in five technician positions unfilled. Half the experienced workforce is aging toward retirement and only 17% of working techs are under 30. Analysts expect labor rates to climb another 10–15% in the next year because of it.

4. Everyone is running older equipment

The average Class 8 tractor is now 6.3 years old — the oldest in more than a decade — and nearly 59% of organizations are still running trucks that are model year 2019 or older. Nobody's replacing iron in this economy. Everybody's running what they've got, longer. Older equipment throws more codes. That's not a problem — it's just reality.
